Overview

The part-time Welding FlexLab Instructor provides lab-based instruction to students enrolled in the Welding Program, including Welding Apprenticeship and Industry Training, at Blackhawk Technical College’s Beloit-Janesville Campus. Instruction is primarily scheduled during evening open lab hours (4:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Monday through Thursday), with flexibility in selecting workdays. Occasional daytime instructional opportunities may be available. This role supports students in completing lab assignments aligned with their coursework, fostering the development of skills essential for careers in welding and fabrication.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Participate in team teaching by working closely with welding faculty to ensure consistent instruction and a unified student experience.
  • Provide one-on-one instruction and lab-based assessment of student learning.
  • Understand and support laboratory assignments aligned with course outcomes.
  • Monitor lab materials and equipment; maintain and repair tools, equipment, and trainers.
  • Collaborate with full-time faculty on course and lab improvements.
  • Enter grades for lab-based assignments in Blackboard.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in FCAW, SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW welding processes.
  • Skilled in thermal cutting techniques including oxy-fuel torch, Bug-O/line burning, manual plasma cutting, and carbon arc gouging.
  • Remain current with industry needs and instructional best practices.
  • Maintain accurate student records and reports.
  • Refer students to Student Services as needed and collaborate to support student success.
  • Create a lab environment that is respectful of diversity and inclusive.
  • Fulfill other duties as required to meet student, employer, and college needs.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree in Welding OR Status as a Journeyworker OR Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)

AND

  • a minimum of two years (4,000 hours) of occupational experience in a welding-related job, with at least one year (2,000 hours) within the past five years.
    • One year (2,000 hours) of related occupational experience may be waived if the occupational instructor has at least two years of post-secondary teaching experience in the appropriate occupational field within five years prior to the date of appointment (two years of post-secondary teaching experience means eight semesters of part-time teaching or four semesters of full-time teaching at an accredited institution).

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous post-secondary teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching in a welding labratory environment and exposure to learning management systems.
