The Surgical Technology Instructor teaches credit courses within the Surgical Technology Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program on the Beloit-Janesville Campus utilizing flexible delivery formats that meet the educational needs of students and regional employers in Rock and Green Counties.

This position reports directly to the Administrative Chair of Allied Health. Duties include teaching courses that prepare a student for careers as a surgical technologist. Additional responsibilities include serving as the Surgical Technology Program Director as outlined in the accreditation standards of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP).

Instructor Responsibilities

1. Provide instruction for Surgical Technology program courses as assigned. Collaborate with employers to develop and update or revise course curriculum as needed to maintain program currency and relevance.
2. Engage in ongoing student learning assessment in the program to determine effectiveness of instruction and curriculum. Use data to measure program outcomes related to student persistence, retention, completion rate, course success, and to design improvement strategies based on the evidence.
3. Remain current on instructional best practices to support a variety of learning styles and utilize academic instructional technologies to improve student success across all program delivery modalities.
4. Outreach to regional healthcare organizations and high school partners to recruit students for the Surgical Technology program. Collaborate with employers to assist in job placement for graduates.
5. Manage classrooms and oversee the lab to ensure a safe and productive learning environment. Responsible for lab inventory, ordering of supplies, tools and equipment, and the maintenance of required lab equipment.
6. Maintain accurate student records and reports as requested by administrative offices and accreditation partners.
7. Identify students needing assistance and refer students to Student Services. Collaborate with Student Services and the Learning Resources staff to help students adjust to the learning environment.
8. Prepare and update course syllabi using BTC guidelines for each course taught and work cooperatively with members of other departments and programs in coordinating courses.
9. Meet weekly office hours and other duties required to meet student, employer, and college needs.
10. Create a classroom environment that is respectful of diversity and demonstrate a commitment to multiculturalism.
11. Convene Surgical Technology Advisory Committee meetings. Participate in department and college-wide faculty meetings.
12. Work cooperatively with library staff in the selection of reference materials and coordination of library reference work for maximum utilization of library and other resources.
13. Participate in staff development activities and serve on college improvement teams and college-wide committees as appropriate.
14. Assist department chair and dean in other duties as assigned.
15. Meet Wisconsin Technical College System professional development requirements through the Faculty Quality Assurance System.

Program Director Responsibilities

1. Responsible for the administration, organization, supervision, continuous quality review and improvement of the Surgical Technology AAS program.
2. Academic oversight of the Surgical Technology AAS program, including curriculum planning and development.
3. Participate in the budget preparation process.
4. Engage in ongoing formal training designed to maintain and upgrade professional, instructional, and administrative capabilities. Participate in an ARC/STSA sponsored accreditation workshop at least once every five years
5. Maintain CAAHEP accreditation of the Surgical Technology AAS degree program; including adherence to accreditation standards, maintaining annual reports, outcomes projects in preparation for self-study and accreditation site visit requirements.

Education & Experience:

1. Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field required. Applicants with an associate degree in Surgical Technology and actively working toward a bachelor's degree may be considered.
2. Credentialed as a Surgical Technician through a national certification program accredited by the national Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
3. Minimum of five years of experience within the past ten years, either in an operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both required. Two years (4,000 hours) of experience must be recent, non-teaching work experience within an operating-room environment.
4. Post-secondary teaching experience preferred.
