Overview

The EMS/Paramedic Instructor teaches credit and non-credit courses in emergency medical services (EMS), paramedic and fire programs at the Public Safety Center on the Beloit-Janesville Campus, and outreach sites in Rock and Green Counties. Position reports to the Administrative Chair of Human Services & EMS/Fire. Duties include teaching courses and mentoring students to prepare them for jobs as emergency medical technicians, paramedics, fire medics and related occupations. This position will collaborate with employers and emergency service agencies to develop, maintain, and upgrade curriculum in the areas of instruction.

Responsibilities

  1. Provide instruction for EMS, paramedic and fire credit and non-credit courses as assigned.
  2. Engage in ongoing student learning assessment to determine effectiveness of instruction and curriculum. Use data to measure program outcomes related to student persistence, retention, completion rate, course success, and to design improvement strategies based on the evidence. 
  3. Remain current on best practices in the teaching field so that instruction is delivered for a variety of learning styles, uses the latest supportive technology, and utilizes alternative delivery methods. Develop curricula, assessments, and lab projects to improve student success in a multitude of delivery modalities.
  4. Manage classrooms and oversee the lab to ensure a safe and productive learning environment. Responsible for lab inventory, ordering of supplies, tools and equipment, and the maintenance of required lab equipment.
  5. Maintain accurate student records and reports as requested by administrative offices.
  6. Identify students needing assistance and refer students to Student Services. Collaborate with Student Services and the Learning Resources staff members to help students adjust to the learning environment.
  7. Develop and update or revise course and program curriculum as needed to maintain relevance. Prepare and update course syllabi using BTC guidelines for each course taught and work cooperatively with members of other departments and programs in coordinating courses.
  8. Provide weekly office hours for duties required to meet student, employer, and college needs.
  9. Create a classroom environment that is respectful of diversity and demonstrates a commitment to multiculturalism.
  10. Attend Advisory Committee and departmental meetings.
  11. Collaborate with business, industry and K-12 school district partners to recruit students to the Paramedic Technician and Fire Technician AAS programs. Assist in job placement activities for graduates.
  12. Participate in staff development activities and serve on college improvement teams and college wide committees as appropriate.
  13. Assist the administrative chair and dean in other duties as assigned.
  14. Meet Wisconsin Technical College System professional development requirements through the Faculty Quality Assurance System.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in emergency services, paramedicine, fire, or related field.
  2. Two (2) years (4,000 hours) of paramedic, AEMT, EMT and/or fire service work experience of which at least one-year (2,000) hours shall be within 5 years prior to date of appointment
  3. State of Wisconsin Certified EMS Instructor I and II, or ability to obtain WI Instructor I and II certification.
  4. State of Wisconsin Paramedic License, or ability to acquire Wisconsin Licensure.
  5. Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Paramedic Certification.
  6. American Heart Association (AHA) BLS/ACLS/PALS Instructor Certification.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. State of Wisconsin Fire and Emergency Services (FESI) Instructor I Certification, FESI II preferred.
  2. International Fire Service Accreditation (IFSAC) or Preboard certifications in Driver Operator, Fire inspector, Fire 1 and 2.
