Overview

The Health Information Management (HIM) Instructor teaches credit courses within the HIM Associate Applied Science (AAS) Degree Program. The HIM Instructor will develop curriculum and teach courses in the Learning Management System, Blackboard Ultra. Curriculum and course(s) will be delivered using a Competency-Based Education (CBE) format which is aligned with the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) program standards.

 

This instructional position is initially funded by a grant through May 2026; ongoing funding will be allocated through the College’s budget process. Full-time instructional workload will begin in the Fall 2025 semester. 

 

This position will be open until filled, with a first review date of March 10, 2025. After this date, the recruitment may close without further notice. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Responsibilities

  1. Plan, prepare, and deliver instruction and facilitate the learning of students within assigned courses.
  2. Collaborate in the administrative activities of the HIM AAS program, including planning, development, scheduling, and budgeting as a professional team member.
  3. Engage in ongoing student learning assessment to determine effectiveness of instruction and curriculum.
  4. Create a classroom environment that is respectful of diversity and demonstrates a commitment to multiculturalism.
  5. Maintain accurate student records and reports as requested by administrative offices.
  6. Support students as a mentor, while referring to college support areas to ensure student success.
  7. Remain current on best practices in the teaching field so that instruction is delivered in a variety of methods, use the latest supportive technology, and utilize alternative delivery methods.
  8. Remain current on curriculum content with use of continuous quality improvement techniques to update content and foster current evidence-based program assessment and improvement.
  9. Prepare and update course syllabi (using BTC guidelines) for each course taught.
  10. Participate in professional development activities and serve on college improvement teams and college wide committees as appropriate.
  11. Attend advisory and departmental meetings.
  12. Assist in the enforcement of college regulations and report student conduct violations to administration.
  13. Meet weekly office hours and other duties required to meet student, employer, and college needs.
  14. Meet Wisconsin Technical College System professional development requirements through the Faculty Quality Assurance System.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills.
  2. Current knowledge and skill in the use of information and computer technology, at minimum with the Microsoft Office Suite.
  3. Ability to work with students with special needs based on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA.)
  4. Current knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting clinical education, students, and the profession of health information management.
  1. Ability to meet the faculty requirements as stated in the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) standards.
  2. Member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
  3. Able to initiate, administer, assess, and document health science education programs.
  4. Able to work independently and coordinate work with colleagues and peers.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management (HIM) from a CAHIIM accredited program
    OR
    Associate’s degree in Health Information Management (HIM) from a CAHIIM accredited program and a Bachelor’s degree in a Healthcare or related field.
  2. Minimum of 2 years, 4,000 hours of related HIM occupational experience of which at least one year (2,000 hours) shall be within 5 years of the date of appointment.
  3. Current credential with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) in the primary areas being developed. AHIMA preferred credentials include RHIA or RHIT, but accepted AHIMA credentials include RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CDIP, CHDA, or CHPS.
  4. Experience in any of the following: supervision, instruction, student guidance, training, educational theories and techniques.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  1.  Master’s degree in a health-related field.

Blackhawk Technical College does not offer H-1B or other work authorization visa sponsorship for this position. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and maintain work authorization throughout the employment term.
